MEL EICHELBAUM

Mel Eichelbaum was born in New York City. As a child, he moved around a lot, and finally came to Texas when he was nine years old. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio and received his Associate in Arts Degree from San Antonio College. He graduated cum laude from St. Mary's University with a Bachelor in Business Administration. He then attended the University of Texas Law School graduating with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1967. After serving in the United States Army, he began his legal practice with the Bexar County Legal Aid Association.

Mel is married to his beloved wife Marlene, who has been a significant partner in the writing and publishing of this book. Marlene has been a true supporter and helpmate throughout his entire legal career. They have two sons, who are both married to girls named Jennifer, four grandchildren, and four grand dogs.

Mel's recollection of his "Legal Aid Years" was rekindled by Professor Marie A. Failinger at the Hamline University School of Law, when she was writing her book. She introduced him to Katharina Herring, who is the past Chief Archivist of the National Equal Justice Library at Georgetown University School of Law, and she inspired Mel to write a book about his legal aid experiences.
